In my opinion, if you are not already a real good player (> 1800 elo), programs are useless for making progress. But it's so easy to think otherwise .... : :P
i would chose human coach,because most people, to none, are going to think of all possable moves and counters for any game 20 + moves deep,there for it's not necesary, or wise, to use software only to be a master,or to mearly improve your game.
if there is a choice for both I will choose it .since it is not I choose Chess software .may be I am wrong but he help me a lot with the development in it and in database ,open books , and engines at last years this make it as super coach
