Sometimes, I think the endgame tablebases should not be the subject of concentration so much as the eval strength of the engine, because I added the syzygy bases and against the original stockfish I only gained 5 to 10 elo. Are they worth the extra space?

Stockfish was originally programmed to be used without tablebases, to rely fully on its superior evaluation technique!

http://support.stockfishchess.org/discussions/questions/258-endgame-tablebase-support

"query:
I'm curious why you are not particularly interested [in tablebase support] in
case I'm missing a good reason not to spend a lot of time working on this.

Marco Costalba:
Because it adds thousands of lines of code, a strong dependency on a
third part tool and all this for nothing.

We like SF to be self-contained, small and fully portable."

Rot !
Read the full topic.... SF would definitely gain if it supported Syzygy EGTB natively... as it is, we have to rely on Ronald de Man's solutions.
Even 5-10 ELO gain (probably more) is nothing to be sneezed at in a fight with a strong opponent !...may mean the difference between a boring draw and an exciting win !

I am of the opinion that focusing the power of the eval of Stockfish, ever improving the tuning of Stockfish is more helpful than running massive tablebases for 5 to 10 elo points when by the time you write the code for the egtb, you would have gained 40 elo points or more. I understand your point though and respect your side.

Agreed.
But what you should realize is that all the top 3 programs, houdini, komodo and SF are very close to each other in strength, it is very unlikely that there will suddenly be a + 40 ELO difference between any of the programs !
So, we should be satisfied for the time being with even + 5 to 10 gain in ELO strength, by whatever means !

A few ELO points can be measured by the same tests but should be missed and accepted as equal. In realy, new chess games a few points is not objectively measurable and important changes are minimum 15-20 ELO points.
I skip of course changes ELO by changes engine and interface settings and manipulation in the selection of opponents!

There is nothing gained if the opponent also use the same endgame tablebase in a match. ELO advantage will be gained when an engine unfairly use EGTB against another engine without EGTB. It is like cheating. EGTB's are very good for analysis not in tournaments.
