The so-called "Shabalov-Shirov gambit" is a speculative gambit, a dagger at the kingside, and a challenge to the center. Yes, like many other wing advances, 7.g4 does have an aim at the center, since it threatens to displace the knight from f6. As with all chess moves, 7.g4 must have some downsides. This move obviously weakens the white kingside, thus making it probably not a suitable place for the king. The white king will usually have to find refuge on the more airy queenside. The advance of the g-pawn also makes White rather vulnerable to the opening of the center, when weakened squares such as f3 might be exposed or the g-pawn itself might be attacked.

GAME 1

Komodo Dragon was happy to gobble up the gambit pawn, and shortly afterwards, Stockfish decided that forcing a draw by repetition was its best option.
With the white king being stuck in the centre, and lines about to be opened up, it looked like a safe decision.

GAME 2

In contrast to the previous game, Stockfish declined the pawn offer.
The two engines castled on opposite sides, and proceeded to eye up the enemy king.
Although, to the human eye, Stockfish looked to be in more danger, the reality was that, as in the first game, both sides thought that the game was drawn throughout.
Some tactics from Komodo Dragon then reduced the game into a rook and pawn ending, that eventually petered out into a draw.

An effective strategy for White is to sacrifice the e-pawn as above.
While Black can accept the sacrifice with 7…Nxe4, White’s compensation consists of a lead in development, more space, and in some instances having the bishop pair in an open position.
The usual way for Black to decline the sacrifice is with 7…d5. If Black declines the sacrifice White must be willing to play with an isolated queen’s pawn.

GAME 3

Komodo Dragon took the gambit pawn, whereupon a trading off of pieces led to a queenless middlegame.
White's compensation for the pawn was as explained in the pre-game notes - mainly an active bishop pair and more space.
Stockfish manipulated proceedings to go into a double rook and pawns endgame, still a pawn down, but with a passed pawn on the b-file.
This was enough to coax Komodo Dragon into forcing a draw through eventual threefold repetition.

GAME 4

This game developed differently, as the gambit pawn was still taken, but the queens remained on the board.
Komodo Dragon had the better development, and more space, enough to compensate for the pawn.
Both sides saw the position as dead equal, and although Komodo Dragon was happy to acquiesce in an early repetition, Stockfish made it work a lot harder before the inevitable conclusion was reached.

D32: Queen's Gambit Declined, Tarrasch, von Hennig-Schara gambit

1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 c5 4. cxd5 cxd4 *

Black's third move is an aggressive bid for central space. After White plays cxd5 and dxc5, Black will be left with an isolated pawn on d5. Such a pawn may be weak, since it can no longer be defended by other pawns, but it grants Black a foothold in the center, and Black's bishops will have unobstructed lines for development. The opening was advocated by the German player Siegbert Tarrasch, who contended that the increased mobility Black enjoys is well worth the inherent weakness of the isolated center pawn. Although many other masters, after the teachings of Wilhelm Steinitz, rejected the Tarrasch Defense out of hand because of the pawn weakness, Tarrasch continued to play his opening while rejecting other variations of the Queen's Gambit,
The Tarrasch Defense is considered sound. Even if Black fails to make use of their mobility and winds up in an inferior endgame, tied to the defense of their isolated pawn, they may be able to hold the draw if they defend accurately.

GAME 5

It would appear that Black can't hold onto the pawn. If White wants the pawn, it gets it, so Stockfish took it.
However, in return for the lost pawn, Komodo Dragon had speedier development and space.
The queens came off early, and Komodo Dragon even instigated a series of exchanges, creating a weak White c-pawn, and cramping up the queenside.
Stockfish was confined to total passivity, and in order to break the position open, it had to give back the pawn and go into a bishop + pawns v knight + pawns endgame that was drawn.

GAME 6

The game developed in a fairly similar manner to the previous one, although through different ways.
White's 18. b4 provoked mass exchanges, leading to a completely drawn endgame in which each side had a rook and bishop (opposite colours), and pawn arrangements that promised nothing.

The Blumenfeld Countergambit

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 c5 4. d5 b5 *

Black sacrifices a wing pawn to establish an imposing centre with pawns on c5, d5 and e6. The natural development of the bishops to b7 and d6, combined with the half-open f-file for a rook, tend to facilitate Black's play on the kingside. White, on the other hand, will typically look to counter in the centre by playing e4 at some point, while their additional queenside pawn also offers them some initiative on that side of the board.

GAME 7

As black, Komodo Dragon pretty much followed the pre-game script with its play, although it did offer to go into a Benko, which Stockfish declined.
As expected, the early action was on the queenside, but the nature of the game changed when Stockfish played 17. Nxe6.
Although Komodo Dragon's pawn structure was weakened, possibilities opened up on the kingside for it.
Stockfish opted to exchange queens to defuse possible danger, and an endgame ensued in which material was initially equal, but black's three pawns were all isolated.
Komodo Dragon played the ending actively, even giving up one of its pawns, but a draw was always going to be the outcome.

GAME 8

In an interesting development, Komodo Dragon chose to give back the pawn early, possibly with the intention of placing pressure on the black centre while the king was still uncastled.
However, Stockfish was unfazed, shoring up the centre quite nicely, and threatening to counter along the semi-open f-file.
Then Stockfish gave up a pawn in order to advance its d-pawn to the seventh rank, but all that eventually transpired following all of the queenside and central pawns coming off, was a dead even rook and pawns ending, because the 3-2 majority on the kingside wasn't enough to play for a win.

At first glance the Marshall Gambit does not look dangerous for Black, but he has to be rather careful if he is to counter White's ideas successfully.

GAME 9

As black, Komodo Dragon decided that safety was the better part of valour, returning the pawn for a solid position, and by move 24, the game was pretty much dead, with a double rook and knight ending and symmetrical pawn structures.
However, after the rooks came off, the resulting knight and pawns ending was interesting for a while, despite the game ending in a draw.
Both sides evaluated this game at 0.00 all the way through.

GAME 10

Stockfish was also happy to keep material equal, but varied its approach to the middlegame with the more active 9.....Bc5.
Although it looked to the human eye that black might be slightly better, by move 23, it looked even.
Then a quick flurry of exchanges led to a rook and knight ending with the same symmetrical pawn arrangements, and once the knights came off as well, the rook and pawns ending was dead drawn.

The Marshall Gambit is a brilliant conception. As White you happily give up a central pawn and allow the Black Queen to take a menacing post on the fringes of your camp. The Main Line continues 6...Qxd5 7.Bxb4 Qxe4+.

You must decide which piece will block the check. If it's the light square Bishop that must shield the King, the g2-pawn falls. Remarkably this is all part of the plan. The Rook is safe as the Queen would be trapped if that capture were made. In this line the Queens get traded and White generally ends up with better, centralized pieces and an attack for the pawn.
If the Knight goes to e2 then a different type of game unfolds. You play your Bishop to f8 to rupture Black's undeveloped Kingside. Amazingly the King cannot take. It would be checkmate next move as the White Queen sits on the open d-file. This line like the other sports a stunning array of tactical ideas.

GAME 11

As white, Stockfish grabbed the g2 pawn as well, but gave one of the pawn backs in order to complete development.
The two protagonists castled on opposite sides, and Komodo Dragon had some sneaky threats against the enemy king, even giving up the exchange in order to preserve them.
31. Bd5 from Stockfish was pleasing to the eye, but led to mass exchanges, after which we saw an interesting R+2P against N+4P endgame.
However, both sides felt that things were completely equal, and ChessGUI adjudicated the game as drawn, shortly after 60 moves.

GAME 12

After Stockfish had taken the gambit pawn, Komodo Dragon created threats with its queen and black squared bishop, that led to black's position being passive.
Both sides castled long, but it was Komodo Dragon being the aggressor, with the pseudo-sac (16. Ne5) requiring Stockfish to be careful. The position was double-edged though, as white also had to be wary of threats against its king.
20....Nf7 held everything together for Stockfish, and then the queens came off, leaving each side with equal material (RRB + pawns).
Then the bishops came off as well, and the double rook and pawns ending was eventually drawn.

One of the world’s first Grandmasters of chess, America’s Frank J. Marshall (1877-1944), left behind a lasting legacy to the chess world with his revered gambit against the Ruy Lopez – the Marshall Attack with 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 a6 4 Ba4 Nf6 5 0-0 Be7 6 Re1 b5 7 Bb3 0-0 8 c3 d5! The Marshall Attack is one of the most important openings in the history of chess and is still deployed with regularity at super Grandmaster level. In current theory the ideas and strategies of both approaches are studied in-depth, and nowadays experts have come to the conclusion that White has no clear superiority in the main theoretical lines.

GAME 13

After Stockfish had taken the gambit pawn, Komodo Dragon lined up its forces against the kingside.
Stockfish gave back the pawn in order to safely complete development, but was then offered another pawn, which it also captured.
The queens and rooks came off the board shortly afterwards, leaving an endgame in which Stockfish had an extra pawn, while Komodo Dragon had an active bishop pair, plus the more active king.
Stockfish played it safe, returning the pawn again, this time in order to enter a dead drawn ending with just opposite coloured bishops and pawns.

GAME 14

With reversed colours, the two engines followed exactly the same path as in the previous game, up until 23...h5.
A series of exchanges then led to an endgame where each side had a rook and bishop (opposite colours) and Komodo Dragon had a meaningless 3 on 2 pawn majority on the kingside.
As default ChessGUI draw adjudication settings don't kick in until after move 60, the game continued, despite the fact that it was dead drawn.

Italian Game - Fried Liver Attack

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 d5 5. exd5 Nxd5 6. Nxf7 Kxf7 *

Originating from an Italian Game opening, white plays an early Ng5 and takes the f7 pawn, drawing the black king into the center! Many players with black will prefer to avoid allowing the Fried Liver Attack, because this opening is considered very dangerous – white will often obtain a big attack.
After 6…Kxf7 7. Qf3+ , the point of white’s sacrifice is revealed. The black king can’t return to the eighth rank because the knight on d5 is under attack. If white were to win that knight, white would be up material AND have a big attack on the exposed black king!
Black needs to play 7…Ke6 to defend the knight, and after the universal 8. Nc3 (adding pressured to the pinned Knight), we arrive at the true starting position of the Fried Liver Attack:
Black is up a piece for the time being, but the king on e6 is extremely vulnerable.

GAME 15

After white was allowed to capture the e5 pawn, there followed an interesting period of play, in which Stockfish ended up with 4 pawns for the sacrificed piece after the queens came off, but Komodo Dragon's king was completely safe.
The last pair of rooks came off, leaving Stockfish with B + 5 pawns against BN + 1 pawn, with the bishops being of opposite colours.
5 pawns v 1 in such a situation sounds daunting, particularly when there are two connected passers on the queenside, but both engines evaluated the ending as 0.00.
Once Komodo Dragon had blocked the passed pawns, the game continued until exchanges led to tablebases adjudication.
