GAME 16

Komodo Dragon was the first to vary from the previous game, with 21. Bf4, but we still ended up with white having 4 pawns for the sacrificed piece.
Both sides believed white had a small edge, but once the rooks came off, and the black bishop had the pawn chain under control, they tended to think it was pretty much equal.
Although not being forced to do so, Stockfish sacced its knight for two pawns in order to get the queens off and take the game into a bishops with opposite colours endgame.
The game was adjudicated as drawn not long afterwards.

Queens Gambit

1. d4 d5 2. c4 *

The move 2. c4 helps white fight for a space advantage in the center, which is a key component of the Opening Principles.
Of course, the pawn does seem to be undefended…but let’s examine what happens if black accepts this pawn sacrifice with 2…dxc4
Black is temporarily up a pawn, but their control of the center will be greatly reduced. Now or later, white may play e4 and obtain full central control.
Black’s c4 pawn is rather weak. After white moves the e-pawn, white’s light-squared bishop will be eyeing this pawn, and it will be difficult for black to stay a pawn-up in the long run without making significant concessions.
Because of these factors, black often declines the Queen’s Gambit – and the white c-pawn is allowed to remain standing proudly on c4, exerting pressure on the center.

GAME 17

Komodo Dragon declined taking the c-pawn, whereupon Stockfish shortly afterwards decided to exchange on d5.
It was interesting that Komodo Dragon chose to develop its bishop on a more active diagonal (6...Bf5) at the expense of allowing its kingside pawn structure to be compromised, although the queens did come off in the process. No long term harm done though, as the pawn structure was restored when Stockfish exchanged bishops on g6.
Komodo Dragon tried to create some action on the queenside, but Stockfish was happy to keep things closed up. As a consequence, there was a long period of piece shuffling before the draw adjudication settings put an end to our suffering.

GAME 18

The return game developed in a more classical manner, although I was surprised when Komodo Dragon chose to castle on the queenside.
Castling on opposite sides was like showing a red rag to a bull, and Stockfish immediately starting throwing its queenside pawns forward.
However, with 14. a4, Komodo Dragon stymied the attack somewhat, until Stockfish muddied the waters with 21...Nxe4.
I can't give adequate explanation of the complexity and depth of the sharp middlegame that followed, but it was pretty amazing stuff.
To cut a long story short, we emerged into a Q + two minor pieces and pawns. The danger to both kings had gone, and Komodo Dragon had an extra pawn, while Stockfish had the bishop pair.
The queens came off, followed by the white knight and a black bishop. But both sides had evaluated the game at 0.00 since move 19, and the inevitable draw resulted.

GAME 19

With Komodo Dragon having taken the gambit pawn, Stockfish immediately set its sights on the weakened black kingside, with an early h4-h5.
Komodo Dragon returned the pawn in order to complete trouble-free development, and we saw a situation with castling on opposite sides.
Stockfish surrendered its a-pawn so that it could take the black d-pawn, but the position looked pretty much equal.
Then the queens came off, and we entered an endgame where each side had a rook, bishop (opposite colours) and 5 pawns.
Some interesting play led to Stockfish having a passed h-pawn, but Komodo Dragon was threatening to create its own on the queenside, with its king in support.
But the position had been considered as 0.00 by both sides since the queens had come off, and the ChessGUI draw adjudication settings kicked in to end the game.

GAME 20

The return game took a different path early, with Stockfish giving back the pawn by playing 5...c5.
However, after black had played g6 on the next move, Komodo Dragon also employed the h-pawn advance seen previously, although it denuded the black kingside after exchanging pawns on g6 and rooks on h8.
With 12....Bxc3, Stockfish shattered Komodo Dragon's queenside pawn structure, winning a pawn in the process, and making the white king look rather vulnerable.
An interesting middlegame ensued, with play focused against white's kingside, but once the queens had come off, the endgame looked pretty even.
After further exchanges, the game entered a bishop of opposite colours and pawns ending. with the result clearly obvious.

BIRD OPENING - The From Gambit

1. f4 e5 *

This strange-looking pawn sacrifice is more dangerous for white than it looks!

After 1. f4 e5 2. fxe5 d6 3. exd6 Bxd6 White almost exclusively plays 4. Nf3, but now the crazy-looking 4…g5 is the main line.
The threat is to kick the knight away, and deliver checkmate on g3.

GAME 21

Komodo Dragon played 3...Nf6 rather than the more usual 3...Bxd6, foregoing pressure against the kingside in favour of putting a positional clamp on the white position. The position after 22...Kg7 illustrates this.
Black was even happy to trade off queens and both rooks to go into a BN + pawns v BN + pawns endgame, still the gambit pawn down.
The game was drawn without any issues.

GAME 22

This was a fascinating game.
Stockfish played the more usual 3...Bxd6 instead of Komodo Dragon's choice 3...Nf6, but following white's 4. Nf3, chose not to follow it up with the more fashionable 4...g5.
Stockfish was quick to castle kingside, but Komodo Dragon opted for a big pawn centre, which meant giving up castling rights. with the need to play 10. Ke2 in response to the cunning 9...Ng4.
Stockfish understandably started to build up pressure on Komodo Dragon's king, but 25. Bxf5 initiated a series of exchanges that neutralised the position, and a threefold repetition followed shortly afterwards.

The Two Knights Defence

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 d5 5. exd5 Na5 *

With 5...Na5, Black counterattacks against the bishop on c4. The main downside of this continuation is that Black's knight can end up largely shut out of play on a5, but the upside is that Black can usually accumulate a large lead in development by kicking the g5-knight away with ...h7-h6, and playing active developing moves. Black will then try to force concessions from White through active piece play, and in some lines can consider launching a kingside pawn storm during the middlegame. However, White can generally maintain the extra pawn, which leaves the chances dynamically equal in most cases.

White can consider 6.d3, defending the bishop on c4, but this doesn't offer White much after 6...h6 7.Nf3 e4. The usual continuation is 6.Bb5+ c6 7.dxc6 bxc6, whereupon White can pin Black's c6-pawn with 8.Qf3, but Black has three strong responses in 8...Rb8, 8...Be7 and 8...h6. 8.Bd3!? has been tried at grandmaster level in recent years, with the idea of playing c3 and Bc2 (then Mark Ginsburg's recommendation 8...Ng4 is a strong reply), but the main line is 8.Be2 h6 and then White chooses between 9.Nh3 (after which Black should generally avoid the temptation to play ...Bxh3, as White can shore up the kingside using the light-squared bishop, and should instead play around the knight) and 9.Nf3. The traditional main line then continues 9...e4 10.Ne5 Bd6 11.d4 exd3 12.Nxd3 Qc7.

GAME 23

Komodo Dragon offered up a second pawn, which Stockfish took.
Although both sides evaluated the position after 13...g5 as 0.00, it looks to the human eye as though white is in for tough times.
However, the Stockfish plan was to give up a knight for a further pawn, and then attack the queenside with a pawn storm. The position after 22...a4 certainly looked more tenable for Stockfish.
After the ensuing mass exchanges, an endgame arose in which Stockfish initially only had two pawns for the minor piece, and although some of the black pawns were ripe for the picking, after 58...Ra8, things had settled, with white having the only three pawns on the board.
However, neither engine had seen any advantage for either side pretty much throughout, and the end result was another draw.

GAME 24

Although both engines had decided upon 8. Bd3 as being the preferred continuation, this game developed differently.
When Stockfish played 13...Nxc3 and followed it up with 14...e4, lines began opening up towards the white kingside.
However, Komodo Dragon had things under control, and following mass exchanges, the position after 38... Ne4 gave a dead drawn endgame.

Evans Gambit

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4 b4 *

The Evans Gambit is an aggressive line of the Giuoco Piano. White offers a pawn to divert the black bishop on c5. If Black accepts, White can follow up with c3 and d4, ripping open the centre, while also opening diagonals to play Ba3 or Qb3 at some point, preventing Black from castling kingside and threatening the f7-pawn respectively. If Black declines, the b4-pawn stakes out space on the queenside, and White can follow up with a4 later in the game, potentially gaining a tempo by threatening to trap Black's dark-square bishop. According to Reuben Fine, the Evans Gambit poses a challenge for Black since the usual defences (play ...d6 and/or give back the gambit pawn) are more difficult to pull off than with other gambits.

GAME 25

Komodo Dragon preferred the 5...Ba5 continuation, and shortly afterwards, gave the gambit pawn back. Both engines already evaluated the game as 0.00.
Following a re-arrangement of their pieces, Stockfish eyed up the black king, while Komodo Dragon was working the queenside.
After 26...a4, a tactical melee erupted, and when the smoke had cleared, Stockfish emerged with queen, rook and five pawns against queen, bishop, knight and four pawns. White had a passed e-pawn, while black had a passed a-pawn.
The queens and both passed pawns then came off the board, and once all of the kingside pawns had been exchanged as well, the game petered out into a draw.

GAME 26

Stockfish also preferred the 5...Ba5 variation, and likewise returned the gambit pawn.
The game changed tack to the previous one when Komodo Dragon played 13. e5.
White played for space on the kingside, with several pawn advances, but after 31...Ne6, was happy to acquiesce in a threefold repetition.

Danish Gambit

1. e4 e5 2. d4 exd4 3. c3 *

After 3...dxc3, Alekhine recommended that White play 4.Nxc3. This line often transposes into the Göring Gambit of the Scotch Game. There are only few lines with Black omitting ...Nc6 and/or White omitting Nf3. This move order enables White to avoid the critical main line of the Göring Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 exd4 4.c3 dxc3 5.Nxc3 Bb4) by keeping open the option of meeting an early ...Bb4 by developing the king's knight to e2 rather than f3 and thus preventing Black from disrupting White's queenside pawn structure.

After Lindehn's continuation: 4.Bc4, Carl Schlechter recommended one of the most reliable defenses for Black: by returning one of the pawns with 5...d5, Black gains time to complete development.
The popularity of the Danish plummeted after Schlechter's defense was introduced as the resulting positions are not what White generally desires from a gambit opening.

GAME 27

As black, Komodo Dragon ignored the c3 pawn, preferring to nab the e-pawn instead.
Then with 8. Nf3, Stockfish surrendered a second pawn as well!
Even so, both engines were evaluating the position as 0.00 even this early.
In order to complete development without any issues, Komodo Dragon gave the two pawns back, and following a series of exchanges, we were into an ending by move 25 with rook, knight and five pawns for each side.
Stockfish developed a clamp on the black kingside, allowing the capture of two of its own pawns, confident in the knowledge that the resulting two black connected passed pawns on the a and b files, could be picked off as desired. The position after 32...Rxa2 shows this.
Stockfish could have taken the draw at any time, but chose to play the game out to tablebases adjudication.

GAME 28

Stockfish was the first to change paths from the previous game, with 15...Re8.
However, a similar thing was Stockfish also returning the two pawn deficit.
Komodo Dragon then gave up its a-pawn in return for getting its queen and rook lined up along the seventh rank
Stockfish could have taken a perpetual check, but decided that it may as well see how its two connected passed pawns on the a and b files would fare, in comparison with Komodo Dragon's lone passed d-pawn.
In an interesting twist, Stockfish gave up its knight to gain a tempo, but in fact, Komodo Dragon had to give up its knight as well, to stop the threat of the black pawns.
A drawn rook and pawns ending eventuated.

Budapest Gambit

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e5 *

After 3.dxe5 Black can try the Fajarowicz variation 3...Ne4 which concentrates on the rapid development of pieces, but the most common move is 3...Ng4 with three main possibilities for White. The Adler variation 4.Nf3 sees White seeking a spatial advantage in the centre with his pieces, notably the important d5-square. The Alekhine variation 4.e4 gives White an important spatial advantage and a strong pawn centre. The Rubinstein variation 4.Bf4 leads to an important choice for White, after 4...Nc6 5.Nf3 Bb4+, between 6.Nbd2 and 6.Nc3. The reply 6.Nbd2 brings a positional game in which White enjoys the bishop pair and tries to break through on the queenside, while 6.Nc3 keeps the material advantage of a pawn at the cost of a weakening of the white pawn structure. Black usually looks to have an aggressive game (many lines can shock opponents that do not know the theory) or cripple White's pawn structure.

The Budapest Gambit contains several specific strategic themes. After 3.dxe5 Ng4, there is a battle over White's extra pawn on e5, which Black typically attacks with ...Nc6 and (after ...Bc5 or ...Bb4+) ...Qe7, while White often defends it with Bf4, Nf3, and sometimes Qd5. In the 4.Nf3 variation the game can evolve either with Black attacking White's kingside with manoeuvres of rook lifts, or with White attacking Black's kingside with the push f2–f4, in which case Black reacts in the centre against the e3-pawn. In numerous variations the move c4–c5 allows White to gain space and to open prospects for his light-square bishop. For Black, the check Bf8–b4+ often allows rapid development.

GAME 29

As white, Stockfish chose to give up castling rights with 8. Kf2, in return for quicker development and more space.
Komodo Dragon threatened to disrupt the white kingside with 13...g5, but after replying with 14. f5, Stockfish was fine, although it did end up ceding a pawn.
With 31. c5, Stockfish began to increase its advantage, as an avalanche of pawns won a piece for three pawns, but it was the follow-up shot 39...Nxg4, that led to a won endgame.
1-0 to Stockfish after 29 games.

GAME 30

Komodo Dragon was first to vary, with the more traditional 4. Nf3.
Stockfish took aim at the white kingside, but after a series of exchanges, only came away with more active play on the queenside.
However, Komodo Dragon was able to neutralize the situation, even ending up with an extra pawn, but the resulting endgame of rook, bishop and four pawns against rook, knight and three pawns, was pretty much equal, with the pawns all being on the kingside.
End result - draw.

Smith-Morra Gambit

1. e4 c5 2. d4 cxd4 3. c3 dxc3 4. Nxc3 *

White sacrifices a pawn to develop quickly and create attacking chances. In exchange for the gambit pawn, White has a piece developed after 4.Nxc3 and a pawn in the center, while Black has an extra pawn and a central pawn majority. The plan for White is straightforward and consists of placing his bishop on c4 to attack the f7-square, and controlling both the c- and d-files with rooks, taking advantage of the fact that Black can hardly find a suitable place to post his queen.

The Smith–Morra is uncommon in grandmaster games, but is popular at club level. It does not have a definitive refutation.

A pretty low key affair, with Komodo Dragon eventually returning the pawn in order to complete development with a balanced position.
After 21...Nh5, the two engines were happy to take a threefold repetition.

GAME 32

Stockfish varied first with 6...e6.
Komodo Dragon eyed up the black kingside, but Stockfish remained untroubled, eventually castling on move 24, and returning the pawn in the process.
The resulting endgame was quite interesting until the white queenside pawns came off, leaving a drawn game.
