Staunton Gambit

1. d4 f5 2. e4 *

White sacrifices a pawn for quick development, hoping to launch an attack against Black's kingside, which has been somewhat weakened by 1...f5. Black can decline the gambit with 2...d6, transposing to the Balogh Defence, but accepting the pawn with 2...fxe4 is considered stronger. Although the Staunton Gambit was once a feared weapon for White, it is rarely played today, since theory has shown how to neutralise it, and White scores only about 50 percent.

GAME 33

Stockfish offered up a second pawn, but Komodo Dragon wisely declined, as the consequences of taking it would have been awful.
In order to defuse some of the danger, Komodo Dragon itself offered up a pawn, and following a short, but exciting melee, Stockfish opted to take an early perpetual check opportunity.

GAME 34

The return game followed similar themes, but with Komodo Dragon playing f3 later, Stockfish developed its queenside knight on d7 rather than c6.
After Komodo Dragon took the luxury of castling long, the black pieces immediately sprung into action, and coupled with the a-pawn's advance, won the exchange for two pawns.
Although this afforded Komodo Dragon the opportunity to counter with its own attack, after 23...Ra5, it was forced to take the perpetual check.
Another exciting short draw.

Scotch Gambit

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 exd4 4. Bc4 *

Rather than recapturing the pawn on d4, white uses his fourth move to develop a bishop actively and take aim at the f7 square! This can cause the Scotch Gambit to be an exciting opening full of tactical chances for white to exploit.

Black’s two main moves against the Scotch Gambit are 4…Nf6 (attacking white’s e4 pawn) and 4…Bc5 (reinforcing the d4-pawn).

https://chesspathways.com/scotch-gambit/

Instead of 4.Nxd4, White has two ways to offer a gambit. The Scotch Gambit (which is the line recommended by GM Lev Alburt in his book Chess Openings for White, Explained) starts with 4.Bc4. Black can transpose into the Two Knights Defense with 4...Nf6 or he can continue the Scotch with 4...Bc5 5.c3 and now 5...Nf6 will transpose into a safe variation of the Giuoco Piano. Black can instead accept the gambit with 5...dxc3 but this is riskier because White will gain a lead in development, after 6. Bxf7+ Kxf7 7. Qd5+ and Qxc5.

The black response 4...Bb4+ to the Scotch Gambit is called the London Defense.

GAME 35

In electing to get its king safely out of the centre with 6. O-O, Stockfish offered Komodo Dragon a second pawn, which was politely declined.
When Komodo Dragon responded to 7. e5 with the clever counter-thrust 7...d5, the resulting flurry of exchanges took most of the sting out of what had been a sharp position.
This resulted in an ending in which each side had two rooks, a bishop (opposite colours) and five pawns apiece, but once all of the rooks had come off, the draw was inevitable.

GAME 36

The return game followed the same path until Komodo Dragon varied with 11. Bg5.
However, although the resulting tactics gave white the opportunity to win the exchange, it also allowed Stockfish the opportunity to take a perpetual check.

Italian Gambit

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. d4 *

It is often played as an alternative to the quiet and closed lines of the Giuoco Piano or Giuoco Pianissimo openings. Black can:
- take with the pawn (4...exd4, a transposition to the Scotch Gambit, usually leading to the Max Lange Attack);
- take with the knight (4...Nxd4), which is considered weak since it allows 5.Nxe5, attacking f7 with the bishop and knight; or
- take with the bishop (4...Bxd4), which is considered best.

GAME 37

After both sides opted for quick development, Stockfish then spiced things up a little with the Re4-Rh4 manoeuvre.
However, there was no real threat there, and once Komodo Dragon played 17...d3, the queens came off, leading to a quiet position with equal material.
With 27...d5, Komodo Dragon gained a spatial advantage, but Stockfish was solid.
After much shuffling around, Komodo Dragon tried again, with 59...b5 and 65...Bxa3, but as before, Stockfish was able to hold a passive position, and the game played out to an eventual draw.

GAME 38

Stockfish was the first to vary from the previous game, with 7...Qh6.
Both sides were able to complete development smoothly, and material was now equal.
Without anything too exciting happening in the process, the pieces started coming off the board, until at move 36, we had an endgame where each side had a knight and five pawns, with the pawns being on symmetrical files.
The inevitable draw resulted with Komodo Dragon giving up its knight to infiltrate the black kingside and pick off the remaining pawns.

Albin Counter-Gambit

1. d4 d5 2. c4 e5 *

The usual continuation is 3. dxe5 d4.
The opening is an uncommon defense to the Queen's Gambit. In exchange for the gambit pawn, Black has a central wedge at d4 and gets some chances for an attack. Often White will try to return the pawn at an opportune moment to gain a positional advantage.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albin_Countergambit

Lawrence Trent calls this “one of the most underrated openings, gambits-wise” and considers it perfectly sound, since he has not been able to refute it with some of the strongest computers in the world.

GAME 39

Stockfish decided to return the gambit pawn, but as indicated in the pre-game notes, black's d4 pawn was indeed like a troublesome thorn.
Stockfish went looking for an advantage on the queenside, while Komodo Dragon focused more on the centre and kingside.
While white was busy picking off pawns, moves like 26...g5, and 31...e4, and then 31...e3, set the scene for some wild and complex chess that my comments could hardly do justice to.
When the smoke had cleared, Komodo Dragon had a knight for the three extra Stockfish pawns, and we were into the endgame.
I felt that there was some quite interesting play in the endgame, but it was always going to be another draw.

GAME 40

In the return game, Stockfish thought for 13 minutes before playing the seldom seen 3...Ne7, which led to the queens coming off early, and white still having the extra pawn.
There was some quite interesting play, as Stockfish castled queenside, but allowed its pawn structure to be wrecked, and for white to gain a passed a-pawn. And still a pawn down
Stockfish gained control down the d-file, and felt that white's advantage started to diminish when Komodo Dragon played 20. Ke3 rather than 20. g3.
In the ensuing double rook and pawns endgame (well worth paying through), Komodo Dragon gave back the extra pawn to get its queenside pawns on the move, but Stockfish always had things in hand, and the game was drawn.

Benko Gambit

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 c5 3. d5 b5 *

Originating from a Benoni Defense, black sacrifices a pawn on move 3 to strike back against the white center.

Unlike many other opening gambits, the Benko Gambit is unique in that black’s pawn sacrifice is not intended to generate an attack. Instead, black intends to generate long-term positional pressure against the white queenside.

GAME 41

Stockfish decided to return the pawn early, and obtained some dangerous looking play on the kingside.
With 22. Rxd6, Stockfish sacced the exchange for a pawn, in pursuit of its kingside attack, but Komodo Dragon was able to hold, as can be seen in the position after 29...Nf4.
A series of exchanges following, in which the queens also came off, but again, while there was some interesting play in the endgame, neither engine saw an advantage, and the game played out to a draw.

GAME 42

The return game followed exactly the same path, until Komodo Dragon played 26. Be3 in preference to the Stockfish choice of 26. Nf5.
Although white's attack didn't appear to be going anywhere, Stockfish still felt that giving back the exchange to go into a Queen, rook and pawns endgame (4 pawns each), was the safest option.
The queens plus a pair of rooks then came off, leaving a drawn rook and pawn endgame, despite the 3 on 2 pawns on the kingside.

C02 French Defence - Advance Variation, Milner-Barry Gambit

1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 c5 4. c3 Nc6 5. Nf3 Qb6 6. Bd3 *

Recently, the Milner-Barry Gambit in the Advance Variation of the French has gained in popularity again. In the old main lines White was often ready to sacrifice both central pawns to open files against Black's king in the centre.
In recent games various strong players have fallen victim of a new concept in this line in which White quickly brings up the h-pawn to restrict mobility on the kingside. The lack of space often leads to mistakes by Black and gives White good attacking chances.

GAME 43

Komodo Dragon returned the gambit pawn in return for pressure down the semi-open c-file, where there was a weak pawn on c3.
However, in the following sequence of moves, mass exchanges led to a pretty lifeless looking endgame, in which each side had two rooks, a bishop (opposite colours) and 4 kingside pawns.
Sounds like the recipe for a draw, and although it took a while to get there, that was indeed the result.

GAME 44

Komodo Dragon varied early with 8. Qe2, and hit upon the new idea mentioned in the pre-game notes, of advancing it's h-pawn.
The position after 20...Ra4 looked quite interesting, although both engines had evaluated the game as 0.00 from move 15 onwards.
The black rook on a4 swung across to the kingside, the queens came off, and it didn't look like Stockfish had any other option, than to accept the threefold repetition initiated by Komodo Dragon.

Ponziani - Fraser Gambit

1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. c3 Nf6 4. d4 Nxe4 5. d5 Bc5 *

The Fraser sacrifices 1 or 2 pieces for long lasting pressure. A single missed tactic spells doom for either side (computers do not miss these). Extremely accurate play seems to result in a draw; no surprise there.

Always found playing against this with White as awkward, even in my correspondence games.

GAME 45

Shortly after the opening moves, the Stockfish queen was chased from one side of the board to the other, while Komodo Dragon's central pawn mass began to march forwards.
Once black had sacrificed a pawn to block up the queenside, Stockfish decided that it was best to force a perpetual check.

In contrast to Stockfish having allowed the capture of the rook on h1, Komodo Dragon chose to play the rook to g1.
The position after 20...Re4 looks ominous for white, with its king stuck in the centre, much delayed development, that enemy pawn on e3, and the black army looking ready to pounce. All that, and Komodo Dragon is actually two pieces up!
However, the queens came off, the e3 pawn was gobbled up, and some sense of normality appeared.
It was interesting that Stockfish then gave up the exchange, but we entered an endgame in which rook, bishop and one pawn, were up against rook and five pawns.
The black pawns were not easy to coordinate though, and Stockfish eventually gave some up to get into a drawn position

Bishops Opening - Urusov Gambit

1. e4 e5 2. Bc4 Nf6 3. d4 *

The Urusov Gambit is an aggressive line in the Bishop’s opening that starts with the moves: 1. e4 e5 2. Bc4 Nf6 3. d4 Instead of playing the normal Nc3 or Nf3, white looks to add pressure to the center of the board with d4 and open up more lanes for white’s remaining pieces to get involved into the attack. Black has two responses. Black taking on e4 with his knight is definitely a worse move. White can play dxe5 and then start to attack the knight on e4. The main line for black is to take exd4. White continues with Nf3 with many strong attacking lines. While this gambit isn’t as possible as the King’s Gambit or the Queen’s Gambit I do think this offers many great attacking lines for white and if black is not careful can find themselves in some tricky situations. As the case with most Bishop openings, black always has to fear the bishop taking on f7 forcing the king to recapture and lose the ability to castle.

GAME 47

As black, Komodo Dragon returned the gambit pawn, so that it could complete development with a solid position.
After each side had re-arranged its pieces, black seemed to be the aggressor, but it was just illusory.
All of the rooks were exchanged, leaving an ending where each side had queen, two minors and five pawns (on symmetrical files).
Then the minor pieces quickly came off as well, leaving a queen and pawn ending.
As Stockfish's passed a-pawn looked to be a potential threat, Komodo Dragon quite happily settled for the threefold repetition that was on offer.

GAME 48

Komodo Dragon was first to vary in the return game, with 5. Bd2.
Almost from nowhere came some brief fireworks, after white had played 9. Ng5, but once the smoke had cleared, we were into an early endgame with equal material by move 19, with rook, knight and six pawns, against rook, bishop and six pawns.
Stockfish eventually tried to construct a mating net around the advanced white king, but a clever resource in 66. Nd5+ forced a trade off into a drawn position.

Blackmar-Diemer Gambit

1. d4 d5 2. e4 *

While rarely seen in professional chess, this aggressive pawn sacrifice remains popular with amateur players of all levels up to Master. In the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit, white sacrifices a pawn in an attempt to accelerate the development of their pieces.
The Blackmar–Diemer Gambit arose as a development of the earlier Blackmar Gambit, named after Armand Blackmar, a relatively little-known New Orleans player of the late 19th century who popularized its characteristic moves (1.d4 d5 2.e4 dxe4 3.f3) and was the first player to publish analysis of the opening.[2] The popularity of the original Blackmar Gambit, however, was short-lived, as it was basically unsound, allowing Black to secure a superior position after White's immediate 3.f3 with 3...e5!. In 1889, Ignatz von Popiel came up with the idea of 3.Nc3, though his main idea was to meet 3...Nf6 with 4.Bg5 (rather than the more usual 4.f3) and provided analysis of the Lemberger Counter-Gambit (3.Nc3 e5). The evolved, modern form of this gambit owes much to the German master Emil Josef Diemer (1908–1990), who popularized the continuation 3.Nc3 Nf6 and then 4.f3 (when 4...e5? is ineffective as 5.dxe5 hits Black's knight, and after 5...Qxd1+ 6.Kxd1 the knight has to retreat to d7 or g8). The position resulting after 3... Nf6 4.f3 reflects the main line of the gambit accepted, although other Black responses on move three are possible. After many years of analysis, Diemer wrote a book on the opening in the late 1950s, titled Vom Ersten Zug An Auf Matt! (Toward Mate From The First Move!), with most of the published analysis devoted to the Ryder Gambit (and associated Halosar Trap), a double-pawn sacrifice characterized by the moves 4...exf3 5.Qxf3.
